Redesign of Aggregate Reporting Process for a Pharmaceutical Company

Strategy, Design Direction, Design, Illustration : Mark Waldo, Principal Design and Strategy at Electronic Ink
With Shannon Fitzhugh-Mengers, Lead Researcher, Electronic Ink and Luis Cielak, Designer, Consultant

Our client was seeking to remove friction that was making its product reporting process inefficient and painful. The process, which occurred annually or quarterly depending on the time on market of the product, resulted in report that was submitted to governmental authorities in the United States and The EU as required.
We developed a current state model that showed both the mechanics of the process and its effects on the sentiment of the employees. Emotional aspects of the employees' worklife were essential to note and address in order to improve the efficiency of the process and quality of the reports.
In-field observations and regular interviews with the team members help to inform analysis. The Future State recommendations fell together quickly due to the depth of research that went into creating the Current State report and the level of collaborative involvement within our team.
Research showed that the process of populating content had become too involved and cumbersome. Recommendations included restructuring the process, creating a new role on the report team and strategic recommendations for the development of enterprise software.
We presented to our client clear changes they could make to their process and proposed new roles that would yield immediate results.
